Buro Harro, together with De Zwarte Hond, Dura Vermeer, Lidl and Bzzzonder, have won the competition for the city centre of Stadshagen in Zwolle. The largest district of the city, which will grow to 30,000 inhabitants, is a small city that requires a lively city centre, with sufficient social facilities, housing, parking, public space and an expansion of the range of shops.
The new building blocks in the urban plan create intimacy in the shopping area. The intimacy and uniqueness of this space is enhanced by a car-free square that offers space for the market and has a distinct pavement and blooming magnolias trees. If the market is not there, the grid pattern on the floor indicates the parking places.
The elevated inner garden takes you into yet another, closed world, with an exuberant character where you can get away from it all. The square, the city foyer and the garden are connected by a prominent staircase. This is the communal garden for the residents and a place to discover for visitors. Flowering fruit trees, a gently sloping carpet of flowers and a biodiverse world for butterflies, birds and bees. In the middle of the garden a greenhouse will be implemented surrounded by vegetable gardens. It is a garden house where residents come together to bake pizza together, read the newspaper while the kids play outside in the sloping orchard.
